All About Ceramic Lights
Timeless Classic Pendant Shapes: Dome, Bell, Bottleneck, Cone and Globe
A timeless pendant shape looks right in almost any room and does not go out of style. The Timeless Series is built around five of these classic forms. A dome is a wide, open shade that sends light down in a clear pool, which suits a table or counter. A half dome is shallower and sits closer to the ceiling. A bell has a rounded top that flares gently towards the rim. It gives a similar downward light with a softer, more curved outline. A bottleneck narrows at the top and widens below, so the shade has a tall, gentle profile. A cone has straight sides and a sharper outline. It suits spaces with clean lines. A globe is a rounded form that feels fuller and softer than the others. Because ceramic is opaque, light leaves mainly through the opening below. The shade itself stays calm, and the light lands where you need it.
Choosing Size and Drop for a Ceramic Pendant
Size is the first choice with a pendant. A small shade over a large space looks lost, and a very large shade in a small room feels crowded. Mini domes work well in a row of several above a counter or a long table, because the light spreads evenly along its length. A cluster of mini domes hung at different heights makes one feature from small pieces. Medium shades suit a single pendant above a round table, a bedside or a corner. Large shades are made for halls, lobbies and entryways, where one lamp has to carry the whole space. For drop, hang the shade low enough to light the surface below, but high enough that people can see over and across it. In a hall with a high ceiling, a longer drop brings the shade down to a comfortable scale. If you are unsure between two sizes, choose the larger one. A pendant that is slightly generous usually looks more deliberate than one that is slightly small.
Timeless Ceramic Colours: Terracotta, White and Other Ceramic Colours
Colour changes how a pendant sits in a room, so it is worth choosing before size. Classic colours stay in style longest, which is why they suit a timeless shape. Terracotta is warm and earthy. It stands out against pale walls and settles in beside wood, cane and natural stone. The brighter orange shades work best where you want the lamp to be the first thing seen. White and cream are the easy choice. They suit almost any wall and let the shape do the work. Green, blue and black are bolder. Green sits well with plants and natural wood. Blue gives a cool contrast against warm walls. Black gives a strong outline against light surfaces. The bulb also changes what you see. A warm bulb deepens terracotta and orange, while a cooler bulb makes white and blue look crisper. If several lamps hang together, keep to one or two colours so the group looks planned.
